Don't Jump Off the Pier (2nd Edition)
The story of surfing at Saltburn-by-the-Sea
By Simon Palmer
How It All Began
I first met Simon Palmer, author of Don’t Jump Off the Pier: The Story of Surfing at Saltburn-by-the-Sea, through a happy accident. During our chat, I mentioned that his original 2009 book had inspired my pastel painting Sea you later.
A few weeks later, I bumped into Simon again. He told me he was planning a 2nd Edition of the book and asked if he could use my painting for the new front cover.
I said yes immediately - an absolute honour.
Simon’s Vision for the 2nd Edition
When we met again, Simon shared his vision for the updated book. He wanted to capture the magic of the ocean - not just for surfers, but for anyone who loves the sea, whether swimming, dipping, or simply admiring its beauty.
For the new edition, he wanted to celebrate the growing presence of women surfers and local sea-swimming groups, showing that surfing isn’t just a male pursuit - it’s for everyone. His goal was to highlight the richness of Saltburn’s sea-loving community.
My Role in the Project
Inspired by Simon’s passion, I offered to help in any way I could - and he gladly accepted. Over the past nine months, I’ve volunteered my time to help bring the 2nd Edition to life.
Working alongside Emma Tweddle, Simon Palmer, Nick Noble, and countless local photographers and surfers has been a real privilege. Everyone generously contributed their time, photographs, stories, and skills, making this a true community project.
Created With Community Spirit
This book is a feel-good celebration of Saltburn’s sea and surf culture, brought to life through love, collaboration, and a strong sense of local pride.
We hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed helping to create it.
